Missouri rut dates 2026
Peak breeding in Missouri lands in mid-November — about Nov 16 in state fetal-study data. Here’s each phase of the rut, what the bucks are doing, and how to hunt it.
The 2026 Missouri rut, phase by phase
Pre-rut
Oct 15–31Rubs and scrapes are showing up. Bucks are still on their feeding pattern.
How to hunt it: Hunt evening food sources and fresh scrape lines.
Seeking
Nov 1–7Bucks are cruising in daylight, checking scrapes and doe groups.
How to hunt it: Sit travel routes downwind of doe bedding, and stay later in the morning.
Chasing
Nov 8–14The first does are coming into heat and bucks are chasing — typically some of the best daylight buck movement of the season.
How to hunt it: Sit all day if you can, on travel routes between bedding areas.
Peak breeding
Nov 15–24Most does are being bred. Bucks stay with one doe, so sightings can go quiet.
How to hunt it: Hunt close to doe bedding — a buck between does can show up at any hour.
Post-rut
Nov 25 – Dec 3Worn-out bucks head back to food to recover.
How to hunt it: Hunt your best food source, especially evenings and cold days.
Second rut
Dec 4–16Doe fawns and does that weren't bred come into heat — a short second round of chasing.
How to hunt it: Watch food where young does feed; bucks will check them.

Good to know
Does the moon change when the rut happens?
Not the timing. Day length sets when does come into heat, so the peak stays close to mid-November every year. EzMap's daily movement score still counts the moon as one spelled-out factor.
Is there a second rut in Missouri?
Yes. About three weeks after the main peak, doe fawns and does that weren't bred come into heat, so expect a short second round of chasing around Dec 4–16.
What are the best days to hunt the rut in Missouri?
Historically the chasing window, about Nov 8–14, gives the most daylight buck movement, and it lands right before the firearms November portion opens on Nov 14. A cold front on any of those days is the one to burn a vacation day on. During peak breeding (Nov 15–24) bucks are locked on does, so sightings get streaky; sit close to doe bedding and stay longer.
Is the rut earlier in north Missouri than in the south?
Not measurably. The Nov 16 peak comes from statewide fetal-aging data and Missouri sits inside one photoperiod band, so the calendar above applies from the Iowa line to the Bootheel. What does change by area is pressure and food: a bottomland farm and an Ozark ridge hunt differently in the same week.
Mornings or evenings during the rut?
Before the rut, evenings on food. From seeking through peak, mornings and midday earn their keep: bucks cruise doe bedding after first light and often stay on their feet until noon. If you can only sit once, make it the morning during chasing and peak, and the evening in pre-rut and post-rut.
How exact are these dates?
The peak is measured: Missouri fetal-aging data put adult does’ breeding peak on Nov 16 (Hansen, Beringer & Schulz, as cited by Green et al., Theriogenology 2017), and the Missouri Department of Conservation puts it in mid-November. The phase windows around it are approximate planning windows — individual deer vary, and the phases blur together in the woods.

EzMap’s free Game Plan shows today’s rut phase — even with no signal — and counts seeking and chasing in the week’s best days, along with cold fronts, the moon, wind, and rain. With Pro, the sits you log build each stand’s record for each part of the rut; after three sits in a stretch, that record helps rank stands with the same wind rating.
